I really want to get a mini dachshund. Can you get one pretty small? Send pics please of yours so i can see how big they usually are, and next to a regular dachshund if you have one. So i can see the difference.
What are they like?
I heard they are great dogs, very lovable, love to cuddle and get along with everyone. True?

Thanks for any info. :]

i don’t have one but my friend does and it is sooooo adorable! The dog gets swarmed by people in the park whenever it goes for a walk. One woman even offered to by the dog. The only thing bad about it is that once it got home it would bark nonstop, but other than that it was the most lovable ball of fluff i have ever seen. lolz

It is HEAVEN! There are so many types of doxies and colers. Short hair, long hair, wire hair; black and tan, red, chocolate, chocolate dapple, black dapple, piebald, brindle, etc., etc.

Bella is my first dog ever. She is a chocolate, dapple miniature dachshund. She weighs just at or under 7lbs and is TINY. When I got her, she was just over 2 lbs!

Here is a video I took about a week or 2 after I brought her home (3 years ago): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5NVTbSBGcU

OMG…I have a million pictures but none uploaded to flicker really…I will post a few…

Bella is VERY lovable, loves to cuddle (naps on the couch on you, loves to sleep UNDER the covers with you, etc.). My dog loves everyone: kids, adults, men, women, etc., but she is very well socialized. Since she was a puppy, I took her everywhere–stores, out to eat (only outdoors, of course, eating at panera, for example, etc.), to friends’ houses, to visit my family. You dog will only love everyone and be super adaptable if you raise it to be that way. So, that part is on you a lot.

Bella just won “Friendliest Dog” out of a bunch of dogs at a dog show–beat a lot of different breeds! Here is a picture of her with her 1st-place trophy. The third place ribbon in the trophy is from fastest dog competition. This is her breeder’s “temperment” page: http://www.spoondach.com/DachshundsGreatTemperament.html

Please, message me with any questions. I could go on-and-on forever about my Bella. Everyone loves her, and I have been told so many times that she is the nicest, sweetest, and cutest dog that someone has ever met!

P.S.–Bella isn’t a barker. She only barks if someone knocks on the door or on command (“speak”). Oh, that’s another thing. they are very smart. All of the people with doxies I know have easily taught their dogs many tricks. Bella can sit, lay down, roll over, dance, walk on her hind legs, hop on her hind legs, crawl, speak, get specific toys on demand, plays “go find it” (hide and seek with toys). She also LOVES to play fetch with her ball. Oh, and she can hit a plastic ball back to you with her nose (like volleyball). Have I told you that she is wonderful? Hehe.

EDIT: Blonde Bombshell doesn’t know what she is talking about. I have an AKC doxie. Here is the breed standard straight from the American Kennel Club Webiste: http://www.akc.org/breeds/dachshund/index.cfm

Per the AKC, under 11lbs. is a Miniature dachshund. 16-32 lbs. is a Standard dachshund. My dog weighs 7lbs. She is Miniature.

There is no such thing as a full-grown, healthy (doesn’t have a genetic disorder), pure-bred, AKC Dachshund that weighs 3 lbs.–period.

Edit 2: BB, you are answering a question that is asking what it is like to own a miniauture dachshund. Who wouldn’t assume that you are talking about dachshunds? If you were talking about an adult dachshund, it would have to have a genetic disorder or not really be a purebred dog to be 3 lbs. (DUH)…like a dachshund/chiuaua mix. You answered a question asking about what owning a doxie is like. So, if you don’t own one or know anything about them (even something as basic as what size they are), then why are you answering the question, insulting me, and saying that my 7 lb. miniature dachshund is big? What in the world?

Anyway, they are wonderful, and I do recommend researching them. I bought a puppy book, checked out a dauchshund book from the library and read a TON about them online before I bought Bella. I also had some really good friends who have a black and tan short hair that I have known for years. Their dog, Norman, loved me, and I loved him. He is the reason I became enthralled with them in the first place. Do you know anyone who has one? If not, you could go to a local small dog park and ask people about their doxies. People love doxies. You could also talk to your local Dachshund rescue group http://www.drna.org and check for your local dachshund meetup http://www.meetup.com (type in your city name and dachshund in the search).

Blond Bombshell is wrong.

Dachshunds are considered Mini if they are 6-11 pounds by 1 year of age.

A Standard Dachshund is 16-32 pounds by 1 year of age.

Don’t get a dachshund because you think it’s cute. Wrong reason. You need to do research.

Dachshunds are hunting dogs, even the mini’s still hunt. Pick up some books from the library and visit:
