It was one of those pieces of chocolate white sprinkles on top and I hear dark chocolate is the worst kind. She is very small and i’m very worried.
She seems alright for the moment but i’m just so worried I always hear things about smaller dogs and poisonous foods.

Stephy Reply November 1, 2010

tak her to the vet IMMEDIATELY!!!!! it cud be an overdose fer the poor girl you shud gooo ASAP!!!!!! b4 it gets to her heart nd she dies!

Kirbz. Reply November 1, 2010

Take one HALF teaspoon of Ipecac or Hydrogen peroxide. It will make her throw up. This causes them to throw up instantaneously so put her in an area that you are not worried about getting throw up in.

Bridget Reply November 1, 2010

if you are concerned take her straight to the vet.
i have heard some dogs die from ewating dark chocoalte.
my dog once a ate a whole big easter egg and she is fine though.
[silly dog of mine]
asses how yoru dog is behaiving, is her behavour normal?
does she look ill? is panting a lot? not mooving much?
i would take her to the vet if i were you.
good luck, i hop shes okay, dont stress too much, im sure she will be fine(:

lol its called the vet…its really common sense to see a vet. also whats wrong with the dog eating cholate? is it alergic?

K Reply November 1, 2010

Oh no, it’s not like that. A small piece of chocolate will not do anything to your dog. Once accumulated, a large quantity of chocolate may cause damage, though.

Here’s an excerpt from an article:

“A small piece of chocolate may not make any visible impact on dogs unless of course the animal eats something else while ‘high’ on chocolate. However, large doses of chocolate may make the dog’s system purge the theobromine that is damaging to the animal. Apart from crying the dog may vomit and may have diarrhea also. Other symptoms of large doses of chocolates are increased urination in the animal and muscle twitching and excessive panting.”

Edit: Wow. I’ve asked several questions in Pets > Dogs, and everybody just says “Vet! Vet!”. Don’t listen to them! They’re just inexperienced, most possibly don’t even own a dog, and want the two points. Going to the vet after a small piece of dark chocolate is ridiculous! Listen to yourselves people!

Jessie Reply November 1, 2010

Give her 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide to make her vomit it back up. Walk her for 15 minutes or until she vomits, whichever comes first.

Then call your vet or ASPCA Poison Control.

ETA: Do not use ipecac–it’s also poisonous to dogs.

Erika Reply November 1, 2010

My goodness. It depends on how much she ate. Keep a good eye on her and call the vet. You will need to know how much she ate. If she ate a small amount – she may just vomit. More than that could be deadly.

Emma K Reply November 1, 2010

pouring hydrogen peroxide in a dog’s mouth will make them throw up…. so yeah. just sayin’.

Dr. Biz Reply November 1, 2010

the dog will be fine, rarely fatal unless in large doses, larger than you’re thinking.

matt k Reply November 1, 2010

dont worry it wont kill your dog my dogs eat chocolate all the time and nother bad happens to them and they are chiwawas

Emily A Reply November 1, 2010

i’d make sure that shes ok. like not puking. call your vet and see wat they say. if she is really tiny u might have a problem. just listen 2 ur vet and think that it will be ok. my grandma has a 5 pound 3 year old mutt and he has eatten everything from stomach pills to coke cans and hasnt died.

⇢Μανδα™ Reply November 2, 2010

You should call the vet and get a professional opinion. Do you know how many ounces it was, or precisely how big it was? She might be fine, but just call the vet first or take her. She’s probably fine. As long as it wans’t a whole chocolate bar, and just an itty bitty piece.

Syd Reply November 2, 2010

*If it was fairly small, don’t worry about it. If it was a pretty big serving, call the vet tomorrow.*

sarahabear Reply November 2, 2010

chocolate is toxic at 1oz choc per pound for dogs call a vet

India Reply November 2, 2010

Well if she is acting weird like really lazy or thrown up, i’d see a vet, my dog can eat chocolate all he wants, (he’s a Miniature Schnauzer) he has some type of disorder that lets him eat chocolate, but other dogs usually are lazy or throw up allot, don’t be worried just take her to the vet.

Julie G (Miss P. Culiar) Reply November 2, 2010

Get on the phone to the vet and ask for advice from a professional. They may tell you to come in so be prepared for that.

Why is Y!A the first place so many people come in a genuine emergency when you can get professional advice for the price of a bloody phone call?

Fall3n1252 Reply November 2, 2010

Well it depends on how big of a peice it was. Usualy choclate wont hurt dogs unless they have large amounts. But you shoud call a vet just to safe.

Captain Obvious Reply November 2, 2010

Call your vet. My dog is a golden retrever and he ate 16 choco chip cookies and the vet told me that my dog will just have diaria

johnny_depp_fann Reply November 2, 2010

Are you talking about snow caps? If she ate just one of them I wouldnt worry about it. A dog the size of a mini dachshund has to eat a few ounces of chocolate to get sick. I have a mini too and she ate some once. She ate half a chocolate bar! But they have to have about 8 ounces to get sick. Thats more than one whole chocolate bar. If she just ate the one then dont worry. If it was something else bigger you might want to take her to the vet. My mini is a couple lbs lighter than yours and she was fine. So if your really worried get her checked out, but those snow cap thingys are really small so I wouldnt freak out.

creepycookie Reply November 2, 2010

it will be fine, just don’t leave food laying around in future.

Brooke F Reply November 2, 2010

i had a dog who was about that size and ate a whole piece of chocolate cake once and nothing happened. he should be fine but if you want call the vet and see what they say.

Toxic levels

The good news is that it takes, on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine, 100-150 mg per pound of your animal, to cause a toxic reaction. Although there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, animal size and chocolate concentration.

White chocolate contains 1 mg per ounce of theobromine. The toxic dose is 200 ounces of white chocolate per pound of body weight. For example 250 pounds of white chocolate will cause signs of nervous system poisoning in a 20-pound dog, 125 pounds in a 10-pound dog.

Milk chocolate contains 60 mg per ounce of theobromine. The toxic dose is one ounce of milk chocolate per pound of body weight. For example one pound of milk chocolate is poisonous to the nervous system of a 20-pound dog; one-half pound in a 10-pound dog. Keep in mind that the average chocolate bar contains two to three ounces of milk chocolate. It would take two to three candy bars to produce toxicity in a 10-pound dog.

Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg per ounce of chocolate. The toxic dose is 0.3 ounces of semisweet chocolate per pound of body weight. One-third of a pound of sweet chocolate is toxic to a 20-pound dog; 1/6 of pound for a 10-pound dog.

Baking chocolate contains 450 mg per ounce of theobromine. The toxic dose is 0.1 ounces of baking chocolate per pound of body weight. Two one-ounce squares of bakers chocolate is toxic to a 20-pound dog; one ounce for a 10-pound dog.

It would seem that it is all right to let your dog have a chocolate treat every now and then if it is the right kind and it is not very often.

The problem with feeding a dog chocolate as a treat is that it develops a liking for chocolate. Since dogs do not seem to be as sensitive to bitter tastes as humans, they may then eat the more toxic baker’s chocolate or they may consume a toxic amount of milk or semi-sweet chocolate if it can get into an improperly stored supply.

What are the signs of toxicity?

Signs are most commonly seen within 12 hours (or less) of chocolate ingestion.

* Excitement / nervousness / trembling

* Vomiting / diarrhea

* Excessive thirst / sometimes excessive urination.

* Muscle spasms

* Seizures

* Coma (rare)

* Death (rare) — likely due to heart rhythm abnormalities.

How is chocolate toxicity treated?

If you suspect that your pet has eaten chocolate (more than the stray chocolate chip that fell on the floor), call your veterinarian for advice.

The toxicity of theobromine is dose dependent. This means that the size of your pet, the type of chocolate, and quantity of chocolate determine if or how toxic it is for your pet.

There is no specific antidote for theobromine toxicity. Medical treatments are supportive, and may include all or some of the following:

* IV fluids – to prevent dehydration from vomiting, diarrhea, and /or increased urination, and to “flush” the theobromine out of the system.

* Emetics – medications that induce vomiting. Used when the ingestion of chocolate is within four hours. Up to eight hours post chocolate ingestion may be effective.

* Activated charcoal – for ingestion greater than four hours prior to treatment, or for patients that show continued signs of toxicity.

* Anti-seizure medications – for patients having seizures and/or muscle tremors.

* Cardiac medications – for patients exhibiting irregular heart rates or rhythms.

What is the prognosis for chocolate toxicosis?

The expected course of chocolate toxicosis is 12 to 36 hours depending on the dosage and effectiveness of treatment. Prognosis is good if the chocolate is removed within two to four hours of ingestion. Prognosis is guarded in animals with advanced signs such as seizures and serious heart dysfunction.

A National Animal Poison Control Center Hotline is available at 1-800-548-2423.

There is a modest fee for the service to support the Animal Poison Control Center.

I have 2 doxies and they have eaten way worse. You can cook her some rice and hamburger meat to clog her up she’ll probably get the runs sorry to say.

Paul Reply November 2, 2010

It takes a full 250gram bar of chocolate to make a small dog sick and about 2.5 bars to kill it.
The dog will be fine.

GO TO THE VET NOW
Dogs are allergic to any kind of chocolate My dog Bear ate some M&Ms and he seemed fine for a few minutes but then he started having trouble breathing we took him to the vet only twenty minutes after he ate it and the vet said that he was about 20 minutes from dieing. So hurry to the vet now.

T Reply November 2, 2010

A small piece will be ok. If it will make you feel better just call an ER Vet. She will be fine.

Jason A Reply November 2, 2010

I know sit on your arse and go to Yahoo answers and ask a bunch of retarded people what you should do.

Call a vet, if they say come in – then call another, if they say come in then suck it up and go in – if not take whatever advice they give you… after all they probably didn’t get their education by asking questions here and reading the answers.

Just in case you find yourself asking in the future, If you chop off your finger while cutting veggies on your counter – DO NOT – sit down on your arse and ask the what to do question, pick up your phone and call a pro – preferably 911.

Hope this helps.

First of all you have to stay calm in stressful situations. And not all dogs are allergic to chocolate, they only say not to give dogs chocolate because most are allergic.

My dog ate a whole thing of Oreo’s and he is fine, so just relax, she’ll be fine.

My Borady (9lb dashound) I just rushed him to the vet 4 hrs. ago and he seemed fine, but I just wanted to be sure. So now that I am home I was reading things on this site and I happen to look over and he’s got himself another choclate bunny. He had stashed himself a few for later which is something he does with his goodies. I flipped. Crazy damn dog. This dog eats everything rocks, logs, dirt, clothes. I think that he’s part goat to tell you the truth. But he managed to down about 6 chocolate bunnies and the tin foil they were wrapped in, while I was out running errands. He seems fine. The vet agreed that it would take alot of reg. Milk chocolate to do harm unless he was allergic to the candy in another way.
